Episode 109 – Monday, November 28th, 2016 (7272)
Just few days left before December and I already feel the breeze and cold weather (although there’s no snow in the Philippines) as the Christmas is getting closer and closer. Because it’s just few days to go before Christmas, there are lots of Christmas carols sung by either young kids or adults to solicit at every home. Speaking of that, in most public malls elsewhere, you hear the sweet Christmas songs from Filipino legend Jose Mari Chan such as A Perfect Christmas and Christmas In Our Hearts in which both of these are my favorites during Yuletide season. And of course, when we watch TV, you’ll watch the beautiful and memorable Christmas station IDs (SID) of the TV networks here at the Philippines (despite of having “dirty” competition called “Network War”). In the past several years, the two biggest TV networks have their own Christmas station IDs to remind our Filipinos the spirit and the meaning of Christmas. Although I’ve never watched TV nowadays because I refer to watch internet live streaming from the United States most especially live sports events, I just refer to watch ABS-CBN, called as the “Family” Network, rather than other TV networks. The station has created Christmas SIDs every year making our Filipinos so memorable and cheerful.
Recently last November 7th, they launched their 2016 Christmas station ID featuring Isang Pamilya Tayo Ngayong Pasko where ordinary Filipinos, most of them are from Leyte where the province was hit by Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, shared their inspiring stories and experiences in their sacrifices and hard work. It was also featured all personalities, from TV and radio, from regional to international, from entertainment to news department to their big bosses, singing and sharing their inspirations on the video. There’s also a separate video (not attached on this page but you may search it) where the kids from The Voice Kids together with their coaches sang on their recording session for this year’s Christmas SID.
Because of their great job to create their memorable Christmas SIDs, I just want to share my top five lists on Christmas station IDs of ABS-CBN. This is just my humble opinion for the list of my most memorable Christmas SIDs, and here are my top five lists:
- 2010: Ngayong Pasko Magniningning Ang Pilipino
When I was starting to recover from the worst incidents in my life, this Christmas SID showed the hospitality and happiness among our Filipinos. It also featured the talented Filipinos that they showed internationally such as Arnell Pineda of the band Journey, the Filipino football (soccer) players who won in 2010 Homeless World Cup (with Derek Ramsey playing who was his final appearance of the network before his transfer to other network), and UST Singers, winning the 2010 Choir of the World – Luciano Pavarotti Trophy. On the final part, the personalities put their Christmas parols to the giant Christmas tree.
This was sung by Toni Gonzaga and Gary Valenciano who sang the part of a song from 2009’s Christmas SID on the final part of the song. It was the one of Christmas SIDs that featured without interviewing or narrating the stories from any ordinary people or any Kapamilya personalities and was lasted only less than 7 minutes (beginning 2012, the station produced Christmas SIDs with narrating stories and lasting more than 8 minutes long with repeating chorus on the final part). This was the first time that veteran comedian Dolphy was not appeared of the video (as he usually took on the final part) after he transferred to other TV network. Instead, Charo Santos-Concio took her appearance on the final part of the video.
- 2014: Thank You Ang Babait Ninyo
In 2014 when I was still happy with my wonderful love life, this Christmas SID featured some Filipinos all over the country interviewed their stories to say thank you for their blessings. Some Kapamilya artists and personalities visited some people such as weathermen, teachers, housekeepers, people with disabilities and medical condition, and some ordinary Filipinos to say thank you for their hard work and inspiration. It was also featured one of my former colleagues in exchange program named Carla who has her disability (using her wheelchair). She was visited by Bianca Gonzalez and Robi Domingo to surprise her, and she was brought to ABS-CBN studios to watch It’s Showtime live.
The song was so cute because the artists who sang for this were the final four contestants of The Voice Kids Season 1 where Lyca Gairanod was the big winner. This was one of my memorable Christmas SIDs for me because it gave a big “thank you” to loved ones. This was the time when I had a [long distance] relationship with my textmate (it was third Christmas to have a girlfriend like her), so that I really thanked her because she came into my life (however we broke up a year later).
- 2006: Angat ang Ligaya ng Pasko
This was the one of my favorites during the few years in Post-Deaf School Era (since my life was moved from “Deaf World” in July 2005). This Christmas SID was so simple, and the song was a Christmas song from the legend Apo Hiking Society, Tuloy Na Tuloy Pa Rin Ang Pasko which was revived by Orange and Lemons who was popular back then. The video featured how the Filipinos were so cheerful and simple when they’re displaying Christmas décors from the useful and recycled materials. On the final part of the video, Kapamilya personalities led by Judy Ann Santos, Susan Roces, Dolphy, and Maricel Soriano exited from the church after Simbang Gabi.
- 2002: Isang Pamilya, Isang Puso Ngayong Pasko
This was the very first Christmas station ID of the station, and it was the best when I was studying in a deaf school (my life was belonged to so-called “Deaf World). It featured all the biggest stars of ABS-CBN such as Vilma Santos, Nora Aunor, Lorna Tolentino, the King of Comedy Dolphy, the King of Action King Fernando Poe Jr., and a lot more to gather together for the biggest, brightest and most star-studded Christmas station ID ever dedicating the station’s being #1 in the past 15 years. The song was mixed both original Filipino Christmas song (made for the network) and a song title “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” (composed by American Jackie DeShannon), but it was perfect which made me so remarkable.
- 2009: Bro, Ikaw Ang Star Ng Pasko
No doubt. This is the best Christmas SID ever! Although the year 2009 was considered for me as the worst year ever in my life since Post-Deaf World Era, this Christmas SID remarked me as the best ever. This was set right after the devastation of Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) on September 26, 2009 where the victims started to overcome from the disaster that they were filled by mud and floods.
The song was so original and overwhelming to the hearts of our Filipinos. Every time I heard this song, it made me almost cried. Almost all of the Kapamilya personalities gathered to sing this memorable and meaningful video which was conceptualized following the popularity of primetime TV series, May Bukas Pa, where the young child actor, Zaijian Jaranilla portrayed as “Santino” and his supernatural friend called “Bro” (Jesus). Overall, this has been the most memorable Christmas station ID by every Filipino, here and in abroad.
Bonus: 2012 Tambayan 101.9 Christmas Jingle
Even though this was not actually a Christmas station ID of the network, I just choose this Christmas jingle (probably a station ID) of Tambayan 101.9 (now MOR 101.9), a flagship FM station of ABS-CBN, as one of my most memorable Christmas jingle of a radio station. It was so simple (without any visual effects or star-studded personalities), but this made me so memorable during the time when I was working in an evening shift in Mandaluyong and going home before midnight after work while listening on the radio. It was because Christmas 2012 was one of the most memorable that I ever had, and it was the best Christmas season because I had a wonderful love life (my first ever Christmas to have a girlfriend despite of long distance).

What do you think about my list on the memorable Christmas station IDs? If you want to tell something about this, don’t hesitate to share your comments on the best Christmas station ID that makes you so memorable. For me, this is just my opinion on the list, and you may decide which one is the best.
Well, this Christmas, I’m hoping that our Filipinos must unite together to share peace. Through the Christmas songs and meaningful videos that are produced by the network, everyone must remain peaceful and have serenity to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and to have a big blessing for next year.
